Closing the Gap Refresh – SA Government Community Consultations

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Closing the Gap, the national agenda that seeks to improve outcomes for Aboriginal Australians in the areas of health, education and employment.

While there has been some progress, currently only three of the seven Closing the Gap targets are on track (child mortality rates, Year 12 attainment and early childhood education), and four of the targets will expire this year.

In July 2017, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) commissioned a review of the current Closing the Gap framework and targets, so that a refreshed framework can be developed.

To inform the review, the South Australian Government’s Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation division is holding public consultation sessions to obtain the views of Aboriginal people and organisations about what a refreshed Closing the Gap framework could look like.

We would like to invite you to attend one of the South Australian Government consultation sessions listed below, so that your voice can be heard on this important issue.

More information about the Closing the Gap refresh, and a discussion paper prepared by the Australian Government Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, can be found at:

Session 1 – Adelaide – Wednesday 21 March 2018

Session 2 – Mount Gambier – Friday 23 March 2018

Session 3 – Port Augusta – Monday 26 March 2018

  • Time: 11am to 3pm

Please choose one of the sessions listed above and register your attendance by emailing John Wright, Senior Policy Officer, Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Department of State Development, at by 12 March 2018. Please specify which session you would like to attend.
